In the News… August 17, 2011

It is with a heavy heart that I post this article about an 18 year old who was tased and killed by campus police in Cincinnatti, Ohio last week. He died of a heart attack.  The Chronicle article says the young man approached officers investigating a report of an assault.

My head is full of non-violent organizing tactics and successes, this action deeply saddens me. Campus police are meant to serve students, not kill them. Police are not evil, but accidents happen. If weapons are equipped, they will be used. Pure and simple. And we need to change this ignorant notion that tasers are not dangerous. Tasers are deadly weapons. The only voices that say they are not are the taser companies themselves.

Last year I worked hard against the UO Department of Public Safety becoming a police force. Tragedies like this are why I kept pushing the boulder up the hill.

This is my earnest prayer that weapons will never come onto the UO campus.

Stormy skies this evening
